Scores are a subjective ordinal scale; gaps within a band carry no ranking meaning

Coverage window: 2026-08-25 16:00 ET regular-session close → 2026-08-26 08:27 ET (pre-market). Includes 8/25 after-hours earnings, the overnight Asia/Europe sessions, and this morning's pre-market. Pre-market quotes in the body tables are cumulative through 08:08 ET; just before filing we re-checked at 08:27 ET, and the names that moved materially are listed in "§0.5 Re-check Deltas" below and have been corrected in place in the relevant entries. Pre-market quote source: the stockanalysis.com pre-market quote API. Pre-market price and volume accumulate from 04:00 ET onward and will keep changing before the open. Coverage scope: this pre-market scan covers roughly 180 focus names (mega-cap tech, semis, software, energy, airlines, retail, biotech, and major sector ETFs). It is a focused sample, not a full-market census; there may be movers outside the lists that were not covered. Every earnings figure tagged "8-K" is taken from the same-day original filing on SEC EDGAR, not from media paraphrase.

0. One-Line Summary

  1. Today is a market-wide bet centered on NVDA. NVDA reports FY27Q2 at 16:20 ET today with the call at 17:00 ET; options imply a single-day move of about ±5.4%~5.9% (≈ $280 billion of market-cap swing). The real test is not the in-quarter beat — consensus of $92 billion sits just 1.29% above company guidance, and the last four quarters habitually exceeded guidance by 3.9%~5.6%, so printing $94.5–96.1 billion is merely "business as usual." There are two tests: ① whether next-quarter revenue guidance, converted to a QoQ rate, is accelerating or decelerating (consensus of $104.2 billion, assuming $95 billion in the current quarter, equals only +9.7% QoQ — the slowest of five quarters); ② whether non-GAAP gross margin guidance can hold 75% — it has been pinned at 75.0–75.1% for three straight quarters, and the Rubin platform starts shipping exactly this half.
  2. The same evening also packs in six software prints — CRM, CRWD, SNPS, OKTA, VEEV, NTNX — a head-on collision between "AI shovel-sellers vs. AI victims." That crack has already opened in the pre-market, but it is narrower than the ETF surface reading suggests: measured stock-by-stock, equal-weighted across 43 names (08:36 ET), software (23 names, excluding INTU/ZM which had their own earnings that day) averages −1.77%, 21 down / 1 up; semis (20 names) average −0.67%, 17 down / 2 up — a gap of about 1.1pp. Note: semis are falling too. This is not "software sold off while semis rose," it is "everything is down, software more so." See §0.6.
  3. Three data releases stack up at 08:30 ET (note: the PCE price index is published inside the "Personal Income and Outlays" release, not as a separate second report): ① BEA Personal Income and Outlays, which contains the July PCE price index (core expected +0.2% m/m / +3.3% y/y, flat with June's 3.3%; headline expected +0.1% m/m / 3.6% y/y, prior 3.7%); ② BEA Q2 GDP second estimate (the 7/30 advance estimate was an annualized +1.5%, below the then-consensus of 2.1%); ③ Census July durable goods orders (belongs to Census, not BEA; release date to be confirmed). Core inflation is stuck at 3.3%, and CME FedWatch shows the September 16 FOMC at roughly 68%–69% odds of no change and roughly 30%–31% odds of a HIKE— note the direction: the market is debating whether to hike, not whether to cut. (Readings are as of 8/17 and 8/20, source CME FedWatch, via CNBC; this brief did not obtain a reading after the 8/25 close, so these odds may have shifted.) This is the macro premise most likely to be misread in this brief. ⚠️ This brief was filed at 08:10 ET, before that data batch was released; everything below is pre-release scenario work and contains no actual readings.
  4. Oil's third straight decline is today's second main line: the Strait of Hormuz has been effectively closed since February 28 (only 3 vessels transited on 8/23 vs. a normal ~85/day), and the restart of Iran–Oman talks is causing the war premium to unwind quickly, with Brent −2%+ to $86.41. The transmission chain is clean: energy names under pressure → yields lower → airlines/transports benefit.
  5. Pre-market state (each reading has a different timestamp, labeled item by item — they are not on the same clock):
    • US equity futures (≈ 08:10 ET): ES −0.09%, NQ −0.25%, YM +0.01%, RTY −0.06%; VIX 15.68 (+1.49%)
    • Treasuries (around 08:00 ET): 10Y 4.648%, +1.4bp; yesterday (8/25) it fell 6.5bp to 4.634%
    • FX and gold (end of the Asian session, ≈ 05:00–08:00 ET): dollar index 98.934 (−1% month-to-date); gold futures ≈ $4,674
    • Asian equities (local closes, ≈ 02:00–03:00 ET, well before the US pre-market): Nikkei −0.4%, KOSPI −0.2%, MSCI Asia-Pacific ex-Japan +0.12% A textbook "wait-and-see ahead of a double event: data plus earnings." ⚠️ The Asian indices are 5–6 hours removed from the US pre-market and must not be read side-by-side as same-moment signals.

0.5 Pre-Filing Re-check (08:27 ET vs. 08:08 ET)

The pre-market accumulates as it goes; in those 19 minutes two names underwent a directional change — this is not noise:

Ticker 08:08 ET 08:27 ET Volume change Notes
🔴 SMTC +4.10% (419,000 shares) −1.20% ($125.99, 536,000 shares) +115,000 shares The entire post-earnings pop has been given back and flipped negative, and it happened while volume kept building — not thin-volume noise. Downgraded to "watch only."
🔴 WSM Quote internally inconsistent, unusable (3,165 shares unchanged across both timestamps) −4.68%($223.76,7,308 shares) +4,143 shares The quote resumed updating; direction confirmed as down. Volume is still thin (<50,000 shares) but now internally consistent, so it is usable for direction, not for magnitude.
ANF +10.13% (316,000 shares) +11.11%($121.00,366,000 shares) +51,000 shares The gap is widening with volume accumulating; gap risk is rising in step
INTU −9.36% (422,000 shares) −9.64% (488,000 shares) +66,000 shares Stable
BSX −4.91% (308,000 shares) −5.84% (463,000 shares) +155,000 shares Decline and volume expanding together — the most certain selling pressure this morning
IGV vs SMH −1.52% vs −0.06% −1.42% vs −0.18% IGV 65,000 / SMH 24,000 shares ⚠️ This comparison is void: the two ETFs differ 5.5x in price, so comparing share counts is meaningless; and IGV's volume field appears frozen. §0.6 now uses a stock-by-stock equal-weighted re-measurement across 43 names; the direction of the conclusion is unchanged but the magnitude is materially smaller
NVDA −0.10% (1.77 million shares) +0.05% (1.96 million shares) +190,000 shares Still near flat — the market has no consensus on tonight
CRM −2.37% −2.13% (72,000 shares) Flat Stable

This table is itself the single most important methodological reminder in this brief: had we taken only the 08:08 snapshot, SMTC would have been written up as "the one earnings report with all three positives" and slotted into the top three of the bullish list — when in fact it had already handed the entire gain back before the open.

0.6 Software vs. Semis: Replacing the ETF Read with Stock-Level Breadth (08:36 ET)

This brief originally used the IGV vs. SMH ETF comparison as evidence of "systematic selling of software," and wrote that "IGV's share count is larger, so this is not thin-volume noise." That sentence is wrong and has been deleted: IGV closed at $101.85 and SMH at $555.82 — a 5.5x price difference, so comparing share counts is meaningless. On a notional basis, IGV's 65,000 shares ≈ $6.51 million while SMH's 26,300 shares ≈ $14.54 million — SMH is actually more than double IGV. Moreover, IGV's volume field read 64,979 shares, unchanged across all four readings at 08:02 / 08:21 / 08:27 / 08:36 — the same defect criterion this brief used to reject the WSM quote, so its notional volume is itself unreliable.

We switched to a stock-by-stock equal-weighted measurement, with the threshold changed to notional value ≥ $5 million, applied consistently to both sides:

Sample Count Equal-weighted mean Up/Down Above-threshold subsample Above-threshold mean Up/Down
Software (excl. INTU/ZM, which had their own earnings that day) 23 −1.77% 1 up / 21 down NOW/ADBE/ZS/DDOG/CRM (5 names) −2.75% 0 up / 5 down
Semiconductors 20 −0.67% 2 up / 17 down NVDA/AMD/AVGO/MU/TSM/MRVL/INTC/SMCI/AMAT (9 names) −0.75% 2 up / 7 down
Reference: SPY / QQQ −0.13% / −0.39% notional $248 million / $401 million
Reference: IGV / SOXX −1.57% / −0.75% IGV volume field questionable; SOXX notional $35.14 million

The conclusion has to be three notches weaker than the first draft:

  1. The gap is real, but it is only about 1.1pp (full sample) to 2.0pp (above threshold) — not the "one-sided" 1.5% vs. 0.4% the ETF surface reading suggested.
  2. Semis are falling too (17 of 20 down, equal-weighted −0.67%). The correct statement is "everything is down, software more so," not "software is being sold while semis hold firm."
  3. After excluding INTU (−9.78%) and ZM (−6.62%), the two names with their own earnings, the software mean narrows from −2.29% to −1.77% — about a quarter of the apparent "sector effect" is actually spillover from those two single stocks. The remaining −1.77% is the part attributable to the sector.
  4. The 5 above-threshold software names (NOW −2.80%, ADBE −2.38%, ZS −4.44%, DDOG −1.91%, CRM −2.20%) are all down and none has same-day company-specific news — this is the strongest single piece of evidence that the gap is real; but the sample is only 5 names, not enough to call it a "sector-level fund flow."

To be verified, not settled. After the open, re-check using the criteria in §8.

2. Strongest Themes, Descending

Rank Theme Direction Strength Core news Logic hardness Durability Beneficiary / victim path Representative names Risks
1 NVDA earnings event TBD S Today 16:20 ET; consensus revenue ~$92 billion / EPS $2.09; next-quarter guidance consensus $103.5–104.2 billion Very hard (primary disclosure) Single-day repricing + 2–3 day diffusion Guidance beat → repricing of the entire AI chain; guidance in line → "sell the news" NVDA, AVGO, MU, MRVL, AMD, VRT, CRWV Over the last 8 quarters the next day was 2 up / 6 down, and the last 4 quarters 0 up / 4 down; "open → close" was negative 8/8 (mean −4.04%); and even in-line guidance implies the slowest QoQ of five quarters
2 Inflation and the rate path TBD S 08:30 core PCE expected 3.3% y/y; September FOMC hike odds ~30% (CME FedWatch, readings from 8/17–8/20, not current); Warsh's debut Friday Hard (official data) Runs through this week Data below expectations → long-duration growth; above → value/energy TLT, XLU, IWM, growth broadly Core PCE has been elevated for a run; an upside surprise does more damage than a downside surprise does good
3 SaaS guidance dulling (the AI-squeeze narrative) Negative A+ INTU/ZM both guided below; six prints tonight — CRM/CRWD/OKTA/VEEV/NTNX Medium-hard (two data points + sector sync) A multi-quarter valuation re-rating Seat-based pricing eroded by AI agents → net new ARR decelerates Hurt: INTU, ZM, CRM, NOW, ADBE, WDAY, MDB, TEAM If CRM's net new is strong tonight, the narrative could reverse on the spot
4 Oil giving back the war premium Mixed A Hormuz diplomacy turns, Brent −2%+ to $86.41, third straight decline Medium-hard (geopolitics, can reverse) Depends on talks; very volatile Energy under pressure; airlines/transports/consumer cost relief; inflation expectations ease Hurt: XOM, CVX, OXY, SLB; helped: UAL, DAL, AAL, LUV The strait is still actually closed (only 3 vessels on 8/23); any setback snaps this straight back
5 Tariff refunds distorting earnings Neutral (needs unpacking) A ANF and WSM both confirm receiving IEEPA tariff refunds, but the two treat them in opposite ways in non-GAAP Hard (unpackable from the 8-K originals) Persists through this earnings season Headline EPS surge ≠ operational improvement; the real signal only appears after unpacking ANF, WSM, HD and all retailers with high import exposure Without unpacking, a one-off refund gets read as an operating inflection
6 AI networking / optical Positive (already priced in) B+→B SMTC revenue +33% to a record and Q3 guidance beating consensus by $50 million, operating margin +660bps QoQ Medium-hard (single-company guidance) Follows NVDA's rhythm 800G/1.6T optical modules and AI networking demand SMTC, LITE, COHR, CRDO, ALAB, FN The strongest earnings report in the theme, and its stock has already flipped red pre-market — meaning the theme was fully priced before yesterday's close; if NVDA disappoints it gives back in sync
7 Retail demand stratification Mixed B+ DKS cut guidance, −30.68%; BBWI −8.29%; ANF/WSM/SJM raised Hard (earnings) This earnings season Athletic apparel/discount weakening; strong brands successfully raising price Hurt: DKS, NKE, BBWI, FL chain; helped: ANF, WSM, SJM Single-quarter data; the stratification conclusion needs a larger sample
8 Nuclear/SMR sentiment trade Positive (soft) C SMR's internal AI tool has no contract and no revenue; OKLO +11.54% is an oversold bounce Soft (no fundamental event) Very short Pure sentiment and positioning OKLO, SMR, UEC OKLO is still −77% from its 52-week high of $193.84 — a weak-stock bounce, not a new trend

3. Overall Single-Stock Strength Rankings

Pre-market data are cumulative through 08:08 ET (names that moved materially have been updated per §0.5).

⚠️ The volume-threshold definition has been corrected: this brief originally used "50,000 shares" as the threshold, which is wrong — comparing share counts across price levels is meaningless (HEI's 573 shares @ ~$300 and MDB's 2,608 shares @ ~$200 do not carry the same information content, and SMH vs. IGV differ 5.5x in price). The threshold is now uniformly notional: cumulative pre-market notional ≥ $5 million to be considered directionally readable, and it applies equally to both long and short sides and to both single stocks and ETFs, never loosened to suit a conclusion (the sector math in §0.6 has been redone on this basis). Names below the threshold are explicitly flagged in the tables below.

5. Detailed Analysis of Top Names

1英伟达NVDA / NVIDIAPriority deep-dive | Score 84

  • Related news: FY2027 Q2 results today at 16:20 ET, call at 17:00 ET (Kiplinger live page). In-quarter consensus: revenue ≈ $92 billion, non-GAAP EPS $2.08–2.09, data-center revenue ≈ $85.4–85.7 billion; company guidance itself was $91 billion ±2% (Q1 FY27 press release).

  • Catalyst logic: the test is in the guidance, and the "in-quarter beat" carries almost no information. Consensus of $92 billion is only 1.29% above the midpoint of company guidance, while NVDA's actual beats versus guidance over the last four quarters were +3.87% / +5.57% / +4.81% / +4.63% (mean +4.72%, and even the worst was +3.87%). Extrapolating the same pattern, revenue of $94.5–96.1 billion this quarter is "business as usual" — a beat on the revenue line requires essentially no new good news, only that the company not do worse than its own worst quarter of the last four.

  • 🔑 The real bar is next-quarter guidance, and it only means something once converted to a QoQ rate. FY27Q3 revenue consensus is reported at $103.5–104.2 billion across sources (Investing.com reports $103.96 billion; Yahoo's aggregation of 43 analysts gives $103.896 billion). But the absolute number is deceptive — the QoQ growth implied by NVDA's last four guides was +15.5% / +14.0% / +14.5% / +11.5%; if the current quarter comes in at $95 billion, then:

Next-quarter guidance Implied QoQ (based on Q2 actual of $95 billion) Characterization
$104.2 billion +9.7% The slowest of five quarters
$106 billion +11.6% Barely matches last quarter's pace
    $108 billion +13.7% Genuinely "strong"
    $110 billion +15.8% Re-accelerating

In other words: if the current quarter prints $95 billion, then "in-line guidance of $104.2 billion" is actually a deceleration on a QoQ basis. Look at the Q2 actual first, then do the division; don't read the headline absolute number.

  • ⚠️ One intuition must be corrected: NVDA itself is not crowded — its supply chain is. The chain rallied together yesterday (AMD +4.91%, SMCI +9.35%, MRVL +4.84%, LITE +6.67%, SMH +1.65%), but pull the lens back to year-to-date:

NVDA SMH AMD MU TSM Nasdaq 100 S&P 500 AVGO
    +14.24% +54.34% +123.75% +226.89% +37.36% +15.68% +12.15% +3.07%

NVDA lags the semiconductor ETF by roughly 40 percentage points year-to-date, lags the Nasdaq 100, is only 2pp ahead of the S&P, and still sits −9.9% below its 52-week high. This is not a stock that money has chased for eight months; it is a stock that has been left alone for eight months. VIX at 15.68 is low and implied move is ~5.9% — the market is neither euphoric nor fearful about it. "Sell the news" presupposes crowded positioning, and that premise does not hold for NVDA itself (it does hold for MU/AMD).

Fundamental check (data from SEC 10-Q / 10-K / 8-K originals)

Quarter Revenue $M YoY GAAP gross margin Operating margin
Q2 FY26 46,743 +55.6% 72.4% 60.8%
Q3 FY26 57,006 +62.5% 73.4% 63.2%
Q4 FY26 68,127 +73.2% 75.0% 65.0%
Q1 FY27 81,615 +85.2% 74.9% 65.6%
  • Growth is accelerating, not decelerating (+55.6%→+85.2%, four straight quarters higher); data center in Q1 FY27 was $75.25 billion, +92% y/y, with Hyperscale +115%. The old-basis breakdown shows networking +199%, far faster than compute at +77% — consistent with the sell-side view that networking is growing faster than compute.

  • China is already a zero base: Q1 FY27 data-center Hopper shipments to China were zero (versus $4.6 billion a year earlier), and Q2 guidance likewise contains no data-center compute revenue from China. All current growth rates are "ex-China" — no upside option from policy easing is embedded, and the marginal impact of further restrictions is close to zero.

  • 🔴 Valuation-basis warning: the TTM P/E of 32.63x is flattered. In the Q1 FY27 income statement, "Other income (expense), net" was +$15.93 billion, against operating income of $53.54 billion in the same period. Investment gains over the last four quarters total $25.03 billion, or 15.7% of TTM GAAP net income. Stripping that out at a 16% tax rate gives an adjusted TTM P/E ≈ 37.6x (TTM non-GAAP P/E is 36.7x). Citing 32.63x to argue "cheap" is wrong. And those gains come from NVDA's equity investments in the AI ecosystem (non-public equity holdings grew from $3.24 billion to $43.36 billion in a year), which overlap heavily with its customer base — this profit line moves in the same direction as end demand and provides no cushion. ⚠️ But this must not be described as "two independent paths corroborating each other" (the prior version said so; corrected): NVDA's own non-GAAP definition already excludes "gains/losses from equity securities, net", the very same item being manually stripped out, so 36.7x and 37.6x being close is a structural necessity, not independent validation. The only thing worth remembering is this: using GAAP TTM 32.6x to argue "cheap" distorts the picture.

  • But the forward P/E genuinely is at a three-year low: NTM forward P/E of 21.22x is the lowest of 12 quarter-end observations over the past 3 years (range 21.22–41.66x, median 31.95x), a 33.6% discount to the median; PEG 0.48. What is "expensive" is the absolute market cap ($5.16 trillion), not the multiple.

  • Cash flow and balance sheet: TTM operating cash flow $125.65 billion, free cash flow $119.08 billion (FCF margin 47.0%); net cash $41.87 billion, debt/equity 0.07. ⚠️ The single-quarter OCF includes a $7.97 billion increase in income taxes payable, a tax-timing difference; excluding it, the figure is about $42.38 billion and cannot be extrapolated.

  • 🔑 The hardest forward-looking signal is purchase commitments: manufacturing/supply/capacity commitments rose from $95.2 billion in 2026-01 to $119 billion in 2026-04 (QoQ +25.0%), of which $95 billion is payable during the remainder of FY2027, roughly 30% of consensus revenue for the rest of the year. This is management betting cash on the supply side — harder evidence than verbal guidance. ⚠️ Basis caveat: starting with the FY26 10-K, this line was renamed from "inventory purchase and long-term supply and capacity obligations" to "manufacturing, supply and capacity commitments," with the wording broadened from "contract manufacturers" to "suppliers," so the YoY +299% partly reflects a widened definition; QoQ +25.0% is the clean read.

  • Inventory: $25.80 billion, +127.6% y/y, faster than revenue at +85.2%; but days on hand have been stable at 105–119 days for four straight quarters and were nearly flat sequentially (114.3→114.7), with raw materials at $6.647 billion, +74.6% QoQ — a raw-material-only surge is the classic signature of "stocking up for a new architecture," not unsold finished goods. Falsification condition: if days on hand break above roughly 125 days this quarter, or if sequential inventory growth materially exceeds the sequential revenue guide (+11.5%), the "stocking up" narrative fails. The company already took $1.1 billion of inventory-related charges this quarter, a 1.2pp drag on gross margin.

  • 🔴 Gross margin has clearly topped, and this is the one number tonight where only one direction carries new information:

    Q1FY26 Q2FY26 Q3FY26 Q4FY26 Q1FY27 Q2FY27 guidance
    GAAP gross margin 60.5% 72.4% 73.4% 75.0% 74.9% 74.9%
    Non-GAAP gross margin 60.8% 75.1% 75.0% 75.0%

Non-GAAP gross margin has been pinned at 75.0–75.1% for three straight quarters, and the company's own Q2 guide is likewise 75.0% — zero improvement. Revenue is still +85% y/y while gross margin does not budge, meaning the incremental revenue no longer carries a higher marginal gross margin than the existing base. And the 10-Q states verbatim: "We expect our Rubin platform to start shipping in the second half of fiscal year 2027" — that is, the next two quarters starting now. The last architecture ramp (Blackwell) pushed gross margin down roughly 300bp and took three quarters to climb back.

  • There is one piece of evidence on cost pressure the market has already voted on with prices: year-to-date, MU +226.89% versus NVDA +14.24%. In a world where "NVDA is the only winner," that ordering could not happen. HBM already accounts for 30–40% of an AI accelerator's manufacturing cost (under 20% two generations ago), and Rubin uses HBM4. The rent in the AI value chain is migrating from design to memory.

  • ⚠️ Customer concentration and circular financing (the most substantive risk item on NVDA in this brief): the 10-Q "Direct Customers" disclosure shows that in Q1 FY27 the direct customers reaching 10% were 21% / 17% / 16%, with the top three totaling 54% (in Q3 FY26 it was briefly four customers totaling 61%). The same 10-Q also states: "one AI research and deployment company contributed to a meaningful amount of our revenue by purchasing cloud services from our customers"indirect demand is further concentrated in a single unnamed AI company.

More important is the 8-K dated 2026-08-17: NVDA issued a residual value guarantee to SB Energy covering roughly 4.25GW of IT load at the Portsmouth, Ohio campus, with cumulative payment obligations capped at $105 billion, classified under Item 2.03 "off-balance-sheet obligations," with leases expected to take effect progressively from 2028; the tenant is an OpenAI affiliate, and the trigger condition is precisely "OpenAI bankruptcy or non-payment of rent." Over the same period on the balance sheet, cash outflow for purchases of non-marketable securities was $18.582 billion this quarter versus only $649 million a year earlier (28x). This is not an accusation of fraud — but it does mean part of the demand was bought with the company's own money, and this risk moves in the same direction as end demand, providing no diversification.

  • One piece of counter-evidence (unhelpful to bears): days sales outstanding improved from 51.4 days to 45.4 days. The classic "stuffing the channel to prop up revenue" objection is directly falsified by the data.

  • ⚠️ An accounting-basis trap with the same origin as INTU's but far smaller in magnitude (a miscalculation in the prior version has been corrected here): NVDA also began including SBC in non-GAAP starting FY27 Q1, but the impact is far smaller than INTU's — Q1 SBC of $1.928 billion ÷ roughly 24.4 billion diluted shares = about $0.079/share (pre-tax), about $0.067/share (after tax), only about 4% of the $2.09 consensus (not the $0.35 / 17% written in the prior version of this brief, which mistook an annualized figure for a single-quarter one). More importantly: NVDA has already restated its historical series — the press release states "The historical non-GAAP financial information presented has been updated to include stock-based compensation expense" and provides restated figures of Q1 FY26 $0.78 and Q4 FY26 $1.59. So historical non-GAAP EPS is comparable across periods; cite the restated values directly and stop using the old-basis $1.05 / $1.30. This is the opposite of INTU's situation: INTU did not restate history and sell-side consensus is still on the old basis, which is what produced that −39% illusion.

  • Pre-market and technicals: −0.10% on cumulative volume of 1.77 million shares (one of the largest pre-market volumes in the market, so the quote is credible). At $213.05 it is −9.9% from the 52-week high of $236.54 and sits at the 67.6th percentile of the 52-week range; 50-day MA 207.81 / 200-day MA 195.43 / RSI 49.61.

  • IV and historical patterns (the most executable passage in this brief): options imply a single-day move of about ±5.4%~5.9% (the 8/28-expiry K=212.5 straddle measured $12.61 = 5.92%, which at a 0.85 factor works out to about 5.03%; ORATS's basis is ±5.4%, about $280 billion of market-cap swing).

⚠️ A widely circulated claim needs correcting here. The media often cite "an average realized move of ±7.4% over the past 12 quarters, so options are underpricing." But recomputing quarter by quarter from actual OHLC, the near-term sample does not support that conclusion at all: over the last 8 quarters the absolute day-after move averaged just 3.73%, and widening the sample to 9 quarters gives only 4.35%; in only 3 of the 8 quarters did the realized move exceed 5.03%. That ±7.4% figure includes the high-volatility 2023–2024 period and no longer applies today. On the near-term sample, options are expensive rather than cheap — buying the straddle has had a negative expected value over the past two years.

The directional statistics are harder still:

    Statistic (last 8 quarters) Value
    Next-day close change 2 up / 6 down, mean −2.78%; last 4 quarters 0 up / 4 down
Next-day gap (prior close → next open) Mean +1.35% (positive)
    🔴 Next-day "open → close" Negative all 8 times, mean −4.04%
    T+5 cumulative 7/8 negative, mean −5.83%

(Widening the sample to 9 quarters, "open → close" is negative 8/9 with a mean of −3.46% — the direction of the conclusion is unchanged.)

Typical pattern: on 2025-02-27 the next day opened +2.83% but closed −8.48% (open→close −11.00%); on 2025-11-20 it opened +5.06% but closed −3.15% (open→close −7.81%). "Gap positive, intraday all negative" literally means overnight good news gets systematically sold after the open, with no exception in 8 quarters.

  • And it is not because there was "no beat": NVDA has beaten for many consecutive quarters, but the size of the beat is decaying — EPS surprise has been compressed from +29.35% in 2023-08 down to +3.46% ~ +5.54% in recent quarters. When the probability of a beat approaches 100% and the size of the beat is stable in the single digits, the information content of the beat itself approaches zero. Pricing runs on variance, not on the number of beats.

  • Quantified reference (base price $213.05):

Scenario Day-after move by historical analogy Corresponding price range (historical analogy, not a target price and not advice)
    Q3 guidance ≥$108 billion (QoQ ≥+13.7%) + gross margin ≥75.0% +3% ~ +5.4% $220–225
    Q3 guidance $103.5–106 billion (in line but decelerating QoQ) + gross margin 75.0% −1% ~ −3% $207–211
    Q3 guidance $100–103.5 billion or gross margin guidance ≤74.5% −4% ~ −5.5% $201–205
    Q3 guidance <$100 billion and gross margin ≤73.5% −5.5% ~ −8.5% $195–201

Note the second row: even "fully in line with consensus" has historically produced a small decline — 2 up / 6 down over the last 8 quarters and 0 up / 4 down over the last 4. The options-implied ±5.4%~5.9% falls entirely inside the 52-week range; the market is not pricing either a new high or a breakdown.

  • Final judgment: Do not participate pre-market, but do not preset a direction using the "crowded stock dies on the news" template. The information only appears after the close; any pre-market position in either direction is pure speculation.

    • Both sides are using the same set of numbers: $119 billion of purchase commitments, the $105 billion guarantee, the 4.25GW contract, ACIE +31% QoQ — one side reads them as "a bet on the future," the other as "a stand-in for customer credit."
    • And gross margin is one of the few variables in this brief where the two interpretations give opposite predictions: genuine demand expansion should let 75% hold or even move up; demand self-funded off the balance sheet would first show up in gross margin via HBM4 costs and the Rubin ramp.
    • Fundamentals can support the current multiple (forward P/E of 21.22x is a three-year low), but only under the assumption that the FY27 consensus of $395.7 billion in revenue / $9.02 EPS is delivered. What is fragile is not the valuation multiple; it is the growth curve the valuation depends on.

2Intuit | Watch closelyINTUPre-market −9.36% · not a simple avoid

This is the stock most likely to be misrepresented by the media today; it has to be unpacked.

  • The media framing: FY27 Q1 EPS guidance of $2.44 vs. consensus $4.02, 39% below; the stock closed −3.37% yesterday and is −9.36% pre-market this morning (422,000 shares, quote credible).

  • But the −39% does not hold, as verified word for word against the SEC original. In the same press release (8-K EX-99.01,2026-08-25) the company states: "Effective August 1, 2026, share-based compensation expense will no longer be excluded from Intuit's non-GAAP financial measures." Sell-side consensus is still built on the old basis (SBC excluded). Comparing new-basis guidance against old-basis consensus is comparing net profit to gross profit.

  • Restatement (the company itself provides the impact in footnote (1) of its guidance table; the original has been checked): full-year non-GAAP EPS includes an SBC impact of $5.81/share (corresponding to $2.020 billion of operating income), and Q1 includes $1.48/share (corresponding to $521 million).

    • ⚠️ $5.81 is an after-tax per-share figure, not pre-tax. Check: $2.020 billion × (1−21%) ÷ 277 million shares = $5.76, within 0.9% of the disclosed value — consistent. Adding it back as if it were pre-tax ($2.020 billion ÷ 277 million shares = $7.35) would restate FY27 to $30.2–30.5, overstating it by 5%. This is the easiest mistake to make when restating.
    • FY27 full year: $22.88–23.12 + $5.81 = $28.69–28.93 vs. old-basis consensus of about $27.30 → roughly 5.1%~6.0% above, not below.
    • Q1: $2.44–2.48 + $1.48 = $3.92–3.96 vs. $4.02 → only 1.5%~2.5% below.
  • And FY26 Q4 was in fact a double beat: revenue $4.354 billion (+13.65%), about 1.8%~2.0% above consensus; non-GAAP EPS (old basis) $4.03 vs. consensus $3.54–3.58, a beat of 12.6%~13.8%. GAAP EPS was only $1.34 because the quarter included $293 million of restructuring charges (equivalent to $1.08/share), which is excluded from non-GAAP.

  • 🔴 Debunking the accounting basis ≠ nothing is wrong here — the real negative is revenue, and the revenue basis is completely unaffected by SBC:

Segment FY27 guided growth FY26 actual growth Deceleration
    Total revenue +8.5% ~ +9.6% +13.90% −4.3 ~ −5.4pp
Global Business Solutions (excludes Mailchimp) +13% ~ 14% +16% (includes Mailchimp) Bases not comparable; reference only
    TurboTax +2% ~ 3% +7% −4 ~ −5pp
    Credit Karma +11% ~ 13% +20% −7 ~ −9pp
    ProTax +2% +4% −2pp
Mailchimp (broken out starting FY27) −1% ~ 0% Not broken out in FY26 No y/y base; only the absolute level is visible

All four lines in this table with a clean y/y base (total revenue, TurboTax, Credit Karma, ProTax) are decelerating. GBS is excluded from the "deceleration" verdict because Mailchimp was carved out starting FY27, making the two periods non-comparable; Mailchimp has no FY26 standalone base, so all we can see is that it is itself at zero growth. The conclusion is limited to those four lines; no universal "no exceptions across the board" claim is made. The harder point is this: the FY27 revenue guidance midpoint of $23.396 billion is about 1.45% below the $23.74 billion consensus — that is the real reason for yesterday's −3.37% and this morning's −9%. On the call, the CEO put the TurboTax problem bluntly: "price is now the number one reason customers leave TurboTax."

  • The offset: margins are still expanding. FY27 comparable old-basis non-GAAP operating margin is 43.3% vs. FY26's 41.7% (+1.6pp); restructuring savings plus pricing/mix absorbed most of the EPS impact of the revenue deceleration, so same-basis EPS is still +18~19%. But that depends on the restructuring savings landing, and the 8-K does not disclose headcount reductions or annualized savings.

  • ⚠️ A risk that has been structurally opened up but has not yet materialized: breaking out zero-growth Mailchimp as a reportable segment starting FY27 usually corresponds to "preparing for a divestiture" or "preparing to ring-fence a drag." On the balance sheet, goodwill is $13.981 billion, 74% of shareholders' equity of $18.992 billion, and Mailchimp was a roughly $12 billion acquisition in 2021. Finer segment granularity makes goodwill impairment testing easier to trigger.

  • Cash-flow quality correction (important): FY26 operating cash flow was $8.838 billion, +42.4% y/y, which looks extremely strong. But "deferred income taxes" contributed +$1.279 billion, versus −$435 million in FY25 — a $1.714 billion y/y swing that is entirely non-cash (matched by long-term deferred tax assets collapsing from $1.222 billion to $172 million). Excluding it, FY26 free cash flow is about $7.338 billion — meaning roughly half of that "OCF +42%" is not sustainable.

  • Shareholder returns are clean: FY26 buybacks of $5.5 billion (+96%), diluted share count −2.1%, so buybacks did cover SBC dilution; dividend +15%; net debt of only $469 million, close to zero net debt.

  • Valuation position (two bases listed separately, never mixed):

    • On the 8/25 close of $357.46: −49.3% from the 52-week high of $705.08; TTM GAAP P/E 21.7x, at the 8.0th percentile of the last three years (three-year median 58.5x); P/S 4.62x, 7.7th percentile (median 10.28x).
    • On the pre-market trade of $323.25 (08:31 ET): −54.2% from the 52-week high; P/S about 4.19x. On either basis, this is a valuation-regime shift, not ordinary volatility.
  • ⚠️ But a low percentile ≠ support: the three-year P/S low of 3.38x occurred just two months ago (2026-06-25, close $255.07). At yesterday's close 4.62x is 37% above that low; even at the pre-market 4.19x it is still about 24% above. Monthly path: 2025-07 $785 → 2026-06 $261 (52-week low) → 2026-08 $357 — this is a second leg down after a rebound, not a first decline.

  • The sell-side pattern is worth noting: yesterday JPMorgan downgraded with a target cut of $605→$331, BofA cut to Neutral, Wells Fargo $360→$300, Morgan Stanley $335→$315; meanwhile the bears are raising — Stifel $275→$300 (Hold), Piper Sandler $250→$290 (Underweight). Bulls cutting and bears raising is the classic pattern of converging expectations.

  • Final judgment: Watch closely, do not chase the short. The core pillar of the bear case (the −39% guidance blowup) is a false proposition per primary verification, and once the sell-side publishes restated-basis models today there is short-squeeze risk; but the revenue deceleration across the board and the 1.45% shortfall to consensus are real, and do not constitute a reason to buy. This is a spot where both sides' arguments are weaker than they look — the real disagreement is not in the numbers but in whether the market is pricing "AI's eventual replacement of tax/accounting software." If it is, an 8th-percentile valuation is not a margin of safety, and the $255 from two months ago is the evidence.

  • Excluding the refund, EPS of $2.42 still exceeds the top end of guidance by 21% ($2.42 / $2.00 − 1 = 21.0%) — relative to the company's own May guidance this is a genuine beat, unlike the earlier HD case (where excluding the refund turned a 4.0% beat into a 7.0% miss). The $1.75 is likewise an after-tax figure (the 8-K footnote specifies a 26% tax rate), on the same basis as EPS, so it can be subtracted directly.

  • 🔴 But "beating guidance" and "beating last year" are two different things, and on a like-for-like basis the year-over-year comparison is down (prior-year figures likewise taken from the comparison column of this 8-K):

    Excluding the tariff refund 2026 Q2 2025 Q2 (adjusted non-GAAP) YoY
    Operating income $153 million $168.1 million −9.0%
    Operating margin 12.1% 13.9% −182bps
    Earnings per share $2.42 $2.32 only +4.3%

Over the same period the company repurchased 7% of its beginning-of-year share count ($282 million). In other words: excluding the one-off refund, ANF's operating profit is down year over year, and that +4.3% in EPS is carried mainly by buybacks, not by operations. Layer on flat comparable sales and Hollister comps of −3%, and this report "beats the low guidance the company gave itself in May" — it does not beat last year.

  • But the magnitude of the full-year guidance raise is being badly overstated:

Full-year guidance Current Prior (5/27) Apparent change
Net sales growth about +5% +3%~+5% Raised
Operating margin 14.5%–15.0% (includes about 220bps of refund) 12.0%–12.5% (excludes the refund) +250bps
Earnings per share $13.10–13.60 (includes $2.10 of refund) $10.20–11.00 +24%
Effective tax rate about 29% about 30% Lowered
Buybacks ≥$500 million about $450 million Increased

Excluding the refund: operating margin of 12.3%–12.8% vs. the prior 12.0%–12.5%, only +30bps; EPS of $11.00–11.50 (midpoint $11.25) vs. the prior midpoint of $10.60, +6.1%, not the apparent +24%.

🔴 And how much of that +6.1% is operating improvement is something this brief cannot attribute. At least three non-operating contributors are known: ① the effective income tax rate falling from about 30% to about 29% (worth about +1.4% on its own); ② buybacks stepped up from about $450 million to ≥$500 million; ③ 8-K footnote (3) states explicitly that the new guidance lowers the assumed effective tariff rate from the prior 15% to 10%–12.5% — that is a change in an external policy assumption, not the business getting better. The 8-K does not break out the contribution of each of these three, and until they are broken out, the +6.1% should not be read as operating improvement; after deducting all three, the residual operating contribution could be close to zero.

  • The real soft spot is comparable sales: total comps were flat (0%), with Hollister comps −3% and EMEA comps −4%; only the Abercrombie brand had comps of +4%. The +5% in net sales comes mainly from store openings (about 30 net new stores for the year). "Revenue growing but same-store sales not growing" is the most classic quality flaw in a retail stock.
  • Q3 guidance: revenue +5%~6%, operating margin 13.0%–14.0% (including about 160bps of refund → 11.4%–12.4% excluding), EPS $2.90–3.20 (including $0.35 → $2.55–2.85 excluding).
  • Pre-market and technicals: 08:08 ET +10.13% (316,000 shares) → 08:27 ET +11.11%($121.00,366,000 shares), the gap is widening with volume accumulating in step, so the quote is credible. At the current price it is still 10.0% below the 52-week high of $133.11. It has already gapped up substantially, and gap-fill risk rises in step with the gain.
  • Final judgment: Watch closely, do not chase. Excluding the one-off it is still a beat, but the magnitude shrinks from "a 24% raise" to "a 6% raise," while the stock has already gapped 10% pricing in the former. The probability of a gap fill is higher than usual — that is a risk note, not an entry instruction.

4Williams-Sonoma | Watch closely | Pre-market −4.68%WSM08:27 · thin volume

Data taken from the SEC 8-K original (filed today at 08:03 ET):

  • Q2 comparable brand revenue +6.2%, total revenue +6.7%; GAAP diluted EPS $2.84, non-GAAP $2.10 (+5.0% y/y) vs. consensus of $2.05 → a 2.4% beat.
  • Key contrast: WSM and ANF treated the same tariff refund in opposite ways. WSM excluded as non-GAAP adjustments the entire $167.8 million refund credited to COGS, $6.3 million of interest income, a $47.5 million supplier rebate reserve, and a $10 million one-time employee 401(k) contribution. As a result:
    • GAAP gross margin 51.6% (+450bps, of which the refund contributed a net +610bps)
    • Non-GAAP gross margin 45.5%, −160bps y/y (merchandise margin −230bps, chiefly tariff costs)
    • GAAP operating margin 22.9% vs. non-GAAP 17.3% (−60bps y/y) In other words: WSM's non-GAAP numbers are clean, while ANF's GAAP EPS of $4.17 includes the refund. Cross-company comparisons that do not first align the basis will produce a completely wrong ranking.
  • Full-year guidance raised: revenue +4.7%+7.2%, comps +4.0%+6.5%, non-GAAP operating margin 17.8%–18.2% (prior 17.5%–18.1%).
  • There is a trackable divergence buried in the guidance: the company explicitly assumes "oil prices will stay elevated in the second half." Yet oil is falling for a third straight day today. If Hormuz diplomacy keeps advancing, WSM's own guidance assumption is conservative and has room to be raised — a real chain linking the macro main line to single-stock fundamentals.
  • Inventory and cash flow: inventory +1.0% to $1.45 billion (healthy); operating cash flow $696 million (including $200.2 million of refund received).
  • Evolution of the pre-market quote (updated): at 08:00 ET it showed +2.67% ($241.00) and at 08:05 ET −2.87% ($228.00), but cumulative volume at both timestamps was an unchanged 3,165 shares (quote frozen, unusable); at 08:27 ET updating resumed, printing −4.68%($223.76,7,308 shares). Direction is now confirmed as down, but volume is still under 50,000 shares, so it is usable for direction only, not for magnitude.
  • Final judgment: Watch closely — and this is the single most worthwhile "fundamentals vs. price divergence" to monitor today. The fundamentals are the cleanest of this batch of retail prints: comps +6.2%, honest accounting (all tariff refunds adjusted out of non-GAAP), guidance raised, inventory +1.0% and healthy. Yet the stock is falling. Two explanations: ① what the market cares about is non-GAAP gross margin −160bps y/y and non-GAAP operating margin −60bps y/y — excluding the refund, margins are actually contracting, which discounts the quality of the "raised guidance"; ② a valuation constraint (some secondhand analysis claims its P/E is about 75% above its five-year average, but this brief did not obtain the primary source or the basis for that calculation and does not use it as a criterion). Today's 10:00 ET call and its explanation of merchandise margin and tariff costs are the key.

⑤ CRM — Salesforce | Watch only | Pre-market −2.37%

  • Reports FY27Q2 (ended 7/31) tonight at 16:05 ET with the call at 17:00 ET — the same moment as NVDA. Consensus EPS $3.27, revenue $11.330 billion.
  • It is the epicenter of the "SaaS disrupted by AI" narrative. Down more than 30% year-to-date in 2026; Morgan Stanley's Adam Wood cut it to Equal Weight on 7/21 with a target of $287→$185, precisely on "the disconnect between impressive Agentforce metrics and insufficient progress in contracted revenue." Repeated upgrades this year from JPM ($250 Overweight), Citi ($204) and others were all knocked back within days.
  • Tonight's real test is not revenue; it is whether Agentforce is creating incremental revenue or cannibalizing existing licenses. Agentforce ARR of $1.2 billion equals only 2.6% of the full-year revenue guidance midpoint of $46.05 billion; total AI ARR is $3.4 billion, +200% y/y — a beautiful growth rate off a base that is still small.
  • Final judgment: No position ahead of earnings. At $200.82 it is already −25.4% from the 52-week high of $269.11. Both bulls and bears are waiting on the same number.

6Semtech | Watch onlySMTCPre-market +4.10% → −1.20% · downgraded from "watch closely" just before filing

  • 8/25 after hours: FY27Q2 revenue $341.9 million (a record, +33% y/y, vs. consensus of $328.6 million), adjusted EPS $0.71 vs. consensus $0.61.
  • The guidance is what matters: Q3 revenue guidance of $410 million, about $50 million above consensus; adjusted operating margin guidance of 31.0%, +660bps QoQ. Management attributes it to AI networking demand.
  • This is the only report today with all three of "in-quarter beat + large next-quarter guidance beat + margin expansion", a direct contrast to INTU/ZM's "beat but dull guidance."
  • 🔴 But the pre-market has already digested the entire positive: 08:08 ET printed +4.10%($132.75,419,000 shares), and by 08:27 ET it had flipped red to −1.20% ($125.99, 536,000 shares). The giveback happened while volume kept expanding — not thin-volume noise. It had already closed +5.47% yesterday, meaning the market priced this in the day before the release, and the after-hours and pre-market sessions merely handed that pricing back.
  • Risk: highly correlated with NVDA — if NVDA's guidance disappoints tonight, SMTC gives back a second time. At $125.99 it is still 40.8% below the 52-week high of $177.35.
  • Final judgment: Downgraded from "watch closely" to "watch only." There is nothing wrong with the quality of the report (it remains the only one in this batch with all three of "in-quarter beat + large next-quarter guidance beat + margin expansion"), but the price no longer offers you an entry discount for that quality. If it can reclaim yesterday's close of $127.52 after the open, reassess.

7超威半导体AMDWatch only | Closed +4.91% yesterday, pre-market −0.60% · Advanced Micro Devices

Yesterday's most eye-catching large-cap advance — but on verification the catalyst contains no new information, which makes this the most counterintuitive item in this brief.

  • Catalyst: Raymond James analyst Simon Leopold upgraded AMD from Outperform to Strong Buy (the firm's top rating) on 8/25, with a target of $565→$641, and raised the 2030 server CPU market size by $37 billion to $201 billion (about a 44% 5-year CAGR).

  • 🔴 But AMD's own management gave the same metric as $220 billion, growing "more than 50%" annually, on the Q2'26 call on 8/11. That is, the sell-side TAM is below the number the company already publicly disclosed three weeks earlier. The essence of yesterday's +4.91% is one sell-side firm moving its model toward the company's existing figures — not the market receiving new information.

  • $641 is not aggressive either: the consensus target averages $612.29 with a median of $600 (S&P Global, 54 analysts). $641 is only 6.8% above the median — a "slightly above consensus" follow. The genuinely aggressive figure is the $1,250 at the top of the range.

  • The fundamentals themselves are genuinely accelerating (data from the company's 8-K originals):

Quarter Revenue $M YoY Data center $M Non-GAAP gross margin Non-GAAP EPS
    Q3'25 9,246 +35.6% 4,341 54% $1.20
    Q4'25 10,270 +34.1% 5,380 57% $1.53
    Q1'26 10,253 +37.9% 5,775 55% $1.37
    Q2'26 11,536 +50.1% 6,718 (+107%) 56% $1.66

TTM revenue is $41.305 billion, with data center at 53.8%; non-GAAP operating margin improved from 12% to 27%; server CPU unit share rose from 27.3% to 34.5% (Mercury Research, Q2 2026). Q3'26 revenue guidance is approximately $13.0 billion ± $300 million (+41% YoY). ⚠️ The true y/y move in gross margin is 54%→56% (+2pp), not the +13pp seen in the news — the year-ago quarter included an $800 million inventory write-down from MI308 export controls, which is base noise.

  • But valuation and cash flow are another matter:

    • P/S 18.94x, at the 91.3rd percentile of the last three years (three-year median 10.26x); TTM non-GAAP P/E 83.2x; forward P/E (NTM) 43.15x, falling to 31.0x only on FY2027 consensus EPS — and that FY27 consensus implies EPS +104.6% y/y.
    • FCF yield is only 1.07%; Q2'26 operating cash flow of $2.366 billion / non-GAAP net income of $2.760 billion = 0.86x, so profit-to-cash conversion is deteriorating (receivables −$1.246 billion in the quarter, capex +187% y/y).
    • 🔴 Buybacks went to zero while SBC is 4.5x that amount: H1'26 buybacks were only $221 million (versus $1.227 billion in H1'25, −82% y/y), with $0 in Q2'26; SBC over the same period was $990 million; diluted share count +1.78% y/y. The company stopped buying back stock while the shares are in a high range and it holds $8.84 billion of net cash.
  • The implied second-half slope is steep: H1'26 actual of $21.79 billion + Q3 guidance of $13.0 billion = $34.79 billion for the first three quarters; full-year consensus of $50.81 billion → an implied Q4'26 of about $16.0 billion (+23% QoQ, +56% YoY, off the $10.27 billion base of Q4'25; the prior version of this brief erroneously wrote +109% y/y, having crossed wires with the FY27 EPS +104.6%, now corrected). The entire 43x forward P/E and the $641 target rest on that slope.

  • Technical position: at $476.30 it is −18.5% from the 52-week high of $584.73 (equivalently: it needs to rise 22.8% to regain the high; this brief uses the drawdown convention throughout); but the monthly path was May $516 → June $581 (peak) → July $476 (−18.03%) → August $479 — peaked in June, pulled back in July, and has been ranging between 470 and 520 in August, with yesterday's +4.91% not yet breaking the top of the August range ($514.39).

  • Final judgment: Watch only. The acceleration in fundamentals is real, but yesterday's advance priced information the company had already given three weeks earlier; with P/S at the 91st percentile, an FCF yield of 1.07%, and buybacks at zero, the risk is not "expectations aren't high enough" but "expectations are already high and depend heavily on whether data center doubles in 2027." Tonight's NVDA guidance will incidentally price AMD's 2027 assumptions too.

⑧ ZM — Zoom | Avoid | Pre-market −6.86%

  • FY27Q2 was a double beat: revenue $1.277 billion vs. consensus of about $1.269 billion; adjusted EPS $1.55 vs. consensus $1.48. Enterprise was +7.8% y/y, the fastest in three years; Zoom Virtual Agent customer count +256% y/y.
  • But the guidance killed the report: Q3 revenue guidance of $1.275–1.280 billion and adjusted EPS of $1.46–1.48, below consensus of $1.50 / $1.282 billion; the full-year revenue guidance midpoint was raised by only $5 million.
  • This is the textbook sample for theme 3 in this brief: the AI product metric (+256%) is spectacular, yet it translated into zero upward revision to revenue guidance. The two-day decline totals 9.32%.
  • Final judgment: Avoid. Not because the report is bad, but because once the conclusion "AI features do not generate incremental revenue" holds, it applies to more than Zoom.

⑨ DKS — Dick's Sporting Goods | Watch only | Pre-market −0.73%

  • Closed −30.68% on 8/25 (the worst single day in three years). Double miss: non-GAAP EPS $0.23 below consensus, revenue $50 million below.
  • The real damage is in the guidance: full-year adjusted EPS cut from $13.50–14.50 to $11.00–12.00, far below the FactSet consensus of $14.28; net sales cut from $22.1–22.4 billion to $21.9–22.2 billion. Management explicitly warned of weakening demand in athletic apparel and footwear.
  • Structurally: owned-store comps were +4.9%, but Foot Locker comps were −3.6% (few new product launches and poor performance) — the acquisition's drag outweighs the core improvement.
  • The spillover has already happened: NKE closed −3.12%, BBWI −8.29%, BURL −4.65%, LULU −3.62%.
  • Final judgment: Watch only, and do not chase the short. At $123.40 it has already broken below the 52-week low of $124.00; the bad news was fully released in a single day yesterday, and this morning's −0.73% shows selling pressure has decayed sharply.

⑩ Energy Sector (XOM / CVX / OXY / SLB) | Avoid

  • 8/25 closes: XOM −2.08%, CVX −1.58%, OXY −2.83%, SLB −1.31%, HAL −2.40%, XLE −1.66%; oil ETFs USO −4.58%, BNO −4.77% (all are single-day 8/25 closing changes). This morning they extend lower by 0.7%–1.1% pre-market (volume not obtained, so this brief gives no magnitude judgment).
  • ⚠️ The two decline figures are on different bases and must not be compared side by side: BNO is 1x long Brent, and its −4.77% is the full 8/25 session; whereas "Brent −2%+ to $86.41" is a reading from the 8/26 Asian session (Reuters, ≈ 02:00 ET). The two windows differ, so they do not contradict each other, but they also cannot be added together or used to corroborate one another. Backing out from BNO, Brent fell roughly 4.8% on 8/25, and adding this morning's −2% gives the cumulative magnitude of the "third straight decline" the report refers to.
  • Driver: a diplomatic turn at the Strait of Hormuz. The strait has been effectively closed to normal commercial shipping since 2026-02-28 (it briefly reopened in mid-June, then was disrupted again in early July after a merchant vessel was attacked); only 3 vessels transited on 8/23 versus a normal ~85/day. Iran and Oman announced a temporary joint maritime corridor and a joint demining framework, and J.P. Morgan says "the market is rapidly pricing in optimism about an interim agreement."
  • Note the reflexivity: the strait is still actually closed, and Iran's deputy foreign minister explicitly said it "remains militarily closed." The current decline prices an expectation, not a fact. Any breakdown in talks snaps it straight back.
  • Final judgment: Avoid energy, but do not short it. This is a news-driven position with violent two-way risk.

⑪ Airlines (UAL / DAL / LUV / AAL) | Watch closely

  • Yesterday: UAL +3.38%, AAL +2.35%, DAL +1.38%, LUV +0.27%; all extend higher this morning (+0.38% / +0.72% / +0.51% / +1.05%), on volumes ranging from 13,000 to 300,000 shares.
  • Logic: fuel is the largest variable cost for airlines, and three straight declines in oil directly improve unit costs; at the same time, lower yields (10Y −6.5bp yesterday) improve the financing cost of their highly levered balance sheets. This is the most complete transmission chain today and the most directionally consistent over two days.
  • Risks: ① it is the opposite side of the same bet as energy, so a Hormuz reversal gives it back in sync; ② it already rallied yesterday, so part is priced; ③ UAL is still −15.1% from its 52-week high of $138.77, making this a bounce rather than a breakout.
  • Final judgment: Watch closely. Airlines and energy are two sides of the same bet, opposite in direction and asymmetric in risk: the decline in energy prices an agreement that has not yet happened, while the rally in airlines prices a cost improvement that already has. This is a description of the risk structure, not a trade recommendation on either side.

8. Opening Verification Signals

Pre-market (before 09:30)

  • Primary test: whether the equal-weighted gap between software and semis holds (use stock breadth, not ETFs). Currently (08:36 ET) software's 23 names are equal-weighted −1.77% (21 down / 1 up) vs. semis' 20 names at −0.67% (17 down / 2 up), a gap of 1.10pp.
    • If 30 minutes after the open the gap widens beyond 2pp and the number of software decliners stays at 20/23 or higher → the "AI shovel-sellers vs. AI victims" split is a real fund flow.
    • If it converges to within 0.5pp → this morning's software selloff is mainly INTU/ZM spillover and does not support a sector conclusion.
    • ⚠️ Do not judge on IGV alone: its volume field stayed stuck at 64,979 shares across all four readings from 08:02 to 08:36 (see §0.6), so its notional volume is unreliable. If you want an ETF, use SOXX (notional $35.14 million, field behaving normally) rather than SMH ($14.54 million) or IGV ($6.51 million and questionable).
  • NVDA's cumulative pre-market volume is 2.12 million shares, notional about $451 million (08:36 ET), the largest notional quote among the names covered here; it has stayed near flat throughout, which means the market has no consensus on tonight's direction — that is itself information.
  • ANF has already gapped +10.13%; watch whether this is gap-and-go or gap-fill: if it falls back below $115 within 30 minutes of the open, the market has seen through the $1.75 one-off refund.

The instant of the 08:30 data release

  • If core PCE comes in >3.4% y/y: September hike odds jump → 10Y breaks above 4.70% → long-duration growth (especially the already-damaged SaaS group) comes under more pressure, and energy/value outperform relatively.
  • If core PCE comes in ≤3.2% y/y: yields fall → IWM/growth bounce, but note that NVDA's earnings will overshadow everything, so the macro positive may not convert into positioning.
  • Asymmetry note: at the current 3.3% level, an upside surprise does clearly more damage than a downside surprise does good, because a downside surprise can only turn "hike" into "hold," while an upside surprise can turn "hold" into "hike."

Intraday (09:30–10:00)

  • Sector-linkage confirmation: whether XLE keeps falling; the direction of the equal-weighted software-vs-semis gap (for ETFs prefer SOXX, whose volume field is the most reliable).
  • Beware "a lone advance with no sector follow-through": ANF is +10% but peers URBN are only +1.31% (1,797 shares), AEO +2.09% (9,535 shares), FIVE +0.17% (1,096 shares) — apparel retail is not following as a group, so ANF is a single-stock event, not a sector move.

Options sentiment and after-hours execution

  • NVDA's implied single-day move is ±5.4%~5.9% (the 8/28-expiry K=212.5 straddle measured 5.92%). Do not copy the media line that "this is below the historical realized ±7.4%, so options are cheap" — recomputing quarter by quarter from actual OHLC, the absolute day-after move over the last 8 quarters averaged just 3.73% (4.35% over 9 quarters), and exceeded 5.03% in only 3 of 8. On the near-term sample options are in fact expensive; the ±7.4% includes the high-volatility 2023–24 period and is obsolete. See §5① for detail.
  • 🔴 The most important execution reminder for tonight (applies to NVDA, CRM, CRWD and all after-hours names): over NVDA's last 9 earnings, the day-after "open → close" drift averaged −3.46%, negative in 8 of 9; the two extremes were −11.31% (2025-02-27) and −8.21% (2025-11-20). After-hours gaps up are very easily erased after the next day's open. Evaluating after-hours trades using "next-day closing change" systematically overstates results — when judging the value of after-hours news, the benchmark must be the next day's opening price, not the next day's close.
  • Historical distribution of the next-day closing change: down 6/9, median −1.77%, down in 5 of the last 6 quarters, range −8.48% ~ +9.32%. Even "fully in line," the historical pattern is still a small decline.
  • CRWD options price about a ±10% earnings move; INTU's options priced ±8.19% last quarter (actual after-hours −9.08%, slightly more).
  • Seven earnings reports land in a tight block between 16:05 and 16:20 tonight (NVDA/CRM/CRWD/SNPS/OKTA/VEEV/NTNX), so after-hours liquidity will be severely diluted and slippage risk is higher than usual.

Risks

  • Reversal after a gap: ANF (+10.13%) and SMMT (+15.46%) are today's two most typical gap-risk spots.
  • Index futures diverging from Treasuries: the 10Y fell 6.5bp yesterday and is up 1.4bp this morning, while NQ futures are −0.25% — falling yields are not lifting growth stocks, which means what is suppressing growth is not rates but earnings and the AI narrative. This runs counter to the common "duration de-leveraging" attribution; do not apply that template.
  • Wait-and-see ahead of macro data: overall pre-market volume is light this morning, so every price signal before 08:30 should be discounted.
  • 🆕 A new variable that appeared in 2026: hyperscaler capex is no longer rewarded. Alphabet fell 7% the day it raised capex, and META is −13.64% year-to-date. NVDA's revenue is someone else's cost, and those companies' shareholders have started to object to that cost. This did not exist in prior quarters, and it is the backdrop for the "customer capex sustainability" question on tonight's call.
  • The secondary risk on Friday: Warsh's Jackson Hole speech is at 08:00 ET on 8/28, the second trading day after NVDA's earnings. A positive reaction to the report has only about 36 hours before it is handed over to an unknown hawkish variable. And some analysts note that within the July core PCE components, price increases in AI-related hardware and software are themselves one of the factors pushing core inflation up — if true, NVDA's pricing power is feeding the very inflation print that could crush its valuation.

9. Final Conclusions

① The 5 Names Most Worth Watching Today

Ticker Theme Rationale Biggest risk Verification point
NVDA AI compute Defines the market's direction tonight; forward P/E of 21.22x is a three-year low, and year-to-date +14.24% badly lags SMH (+54.34%) — it is not a crowded stock Even in-line guidance is the slowest QoQ in five quarters; 2 up / 6 down on the day after over the last 8 quarters Three numbers, decisive the moment they print (see below)
ANF Apparel retail Even excluding the one-off, it still beats the top of guidance by 21% Already gapped +10%; comparable sales flat Whether it holds $115 in the first 30 minutes; the call's explanation of Hollister comps at −3%
CRM Software The epicenter of the SaaS narrative; the verdict comes tonight Reports at the same moment as NVDA, so the information gets drowned out cRPO growth and whether Agentforce brings net new contracted revenue (rather than replacing licenses)
INTU Software The bear pillar (−39% guidance) is verified against the SEC original as a false proposition created by an accounting change; Q4 was in fact a double beat The across-the-board revenue deceleration and the 1.45% shortfall to consensus are real; an 8th-percentile valuation is not support (a lower one was seen just two months ago) Whether any sell-side firm publishes an SBC-restated model today (the bears, Stifel/Piper, are already raising targets); if so, squeeze risk rises
UAL Airlines The most complete transmission chain on the oil main line, and the most directionally consistent over two days A reversal in the Hormuz talks Whether Brent stays below $88; whether DAL/LUV/AAL move in sync after the open (a lone mover falsifies it)

NVDA's three verdict numbers (read in this order after 16:20 tonight)

# Number Where to find it Bulls are right if Bears are right if
1 Q3 revenue guidance ÷ Q2 actual = QoQ The Outlook section of the press release Guidance ≥$108 billion, or QoQ ≥+13.7% Guidance ≤$104 billion and QoQ <+10%
2 Q3 non-GAAP gross margin guidance The Outlook section of the press release ≥75.0% (a fourth straight quarter without a decline, meaning the Rubin ramp is not dilutive and HBM4 costs have been passed through) ≤74.5%; if ≤73.5% it is a repeat of the Blackwell-style 300bp tuition
3 The "10%-or-more direct customers" concentration + manufacturing/supply/capacity commitments Only in the 10-Q, not the press release (usually tens of minutes to a few hours later) Top three ≤50% and commitments $130 billion+, inventory charges <$1 billion Top three ≥58% (especially any single customer ≥25%); commitments >$140 billion or a sudden decline; quarterly charges >$2 billion

⚠️ Item 3 is the one most likely to be missed this time: when most of the immediate price reaction happens, the 10-Q has not been read yet; and the body text of the $105 billion residual value guarantee agreement will also be made public for the first time as an exhibit to that 10-Q. Auxiliary referees: ① if in-quarter revenue is <$94.5 billion (a beat versus guidance of less than +3.87%), that would be the first new low in the size of the guidance beat in four quarters, and the foundation of the bulls' "low bar" argument collapses on the spot; ② the day after, look at open → close rather than the closing change — that measure was negative 8/8 over the last 8 quarters.

② The 3 Strongest Themes Today

Theme Core catalyst Durability Representative names
1. NVDA earnings event Today 16:20 ET; next-quarter guidance consensus $103.5–104.2 billion (only +9.7% once converted to QoQ, the slowest of five quarters) Single-day repricing + 2–3 day diffusion NVDA, AVGO, MU, AMD
2. SaaS guidance dulling INTU/ZM already realized, six prints tonight from CRM/CRWD/OKTA/VEEV/NTNX; software's 23 names equal-weighted −1.77% (21 down) vs. semis' 20 names at −0.67% (17 down), a gap of 1.10pp A multi-quarter valuation re-rating Hurt: CRM, NOW, ADBE, WDAY
3. Oil giving back the war premium Hormuz diplomacy turns, Brent falls a third day to $86.41 High volatility, depends on the talks Helped: UAL, DAL; hurt: XOM, OXY

③ What to Avoid Today

  1. Chasing any gapped-up name pre-market — ANF (already widened to +11.11% by 08:27), SMMT (+15.46%), SJM (+3.71%, on only 14,000 shares). Today is a double-event day (08:30 data + after-hours earnings), and the probability of a pre-market gap being filled is higher than usual. SMTC gave a live demonstration this morning: +4.10% at 08:08, flipped red to −1.20% by 08:27, and it did so on rising volume.
  2. Nuclear/SMR concepts (OKLO, SMR) — the catalyst is verified as internal-tool news with no contract, no order, no revenue, and both are more than −77% below their 52-week highs; this is a weak-stock bounce, not a new trend.
  3. Chasing AMD's +4.91% from yesterday — on verification, Raymond James's 2030 server CPU TAM ($201 billion / 44% CAGR) is below the $220 billion / >50% that AMD's management published itself three weeks ago (the 8/11 call), and the $641 target is only 6.8% above the consensus median of $600. This advance priced information that was already public, while AMD's P/S is at the 91st percentile of three years, its FCF yield is only 1.07%, and quarterly buybacks are at zero while SBC is 4.5x that amount.
  4. Any directional position in NVDA ahead of earnings — the information only appears after the close, so a pre-market position is pure speculation.
  5. Shorting a negative that is already fully realized — DKS was already −30.68% yesterday and only −0.73% this morning; selling pressure has decayed.
  6. Pre-market quotes on less than 50,000 shares — HEI (573 shares), VEEV (537 shares), FIVE (1,096 shares), MDB (2,608 shares), OKTA (2,653 shares), WSM (7,308 shares cumulative at 08:27). For these names this list gives direction only, no magnitude judgment. The threshold applies equally to both the long and short sides and is never loosened to suit a conclusion.

④ The Final One-Line Judgment

Today is a double-event day where "the morning is set by the inflation data and the afternoon decides life or death via NVDA"; the pre-market is broadly down, with software down more than semis — software's 23 names equal-weighted −1.77% (21 down / 1 up) vs. semis' 20 names at −0.67% (17 down / 2 up), a gap of about 1.1pp. This is a "tendency awaiting verification," not a confirmed sector fund flow. Before the two moments of 08:30 and 16:20, no pre-market price constitutes sufficient evidence — SMTC flipping from +4.10% to −1.20% in 19 minutes this morning is the live footnote to that sentence. The most rational course is to hold position back until the information appears; and what really has to be compared tonight is not "did NVDA beat" (it probably will, and the size of the beat has decayed from +29% two years ago to around +5%, so the information content approaches zero), but three things: ① whether next-quarter guidance divided by the current quarter's actual is accelerating or decelerating on a QoQ basis; ② whether non-GAAP gross margin can hold 75% for a fourth straight quarter; ③ whether CRM's Agentforce finally converts into contracted revenue.

Data Sourcing & Quality Log (internal)

Errors identified and avoided:

  1. A search summary returned "ANF Q2: adjusted EPS $2.32 vs. $2.27, revenue $1.2 billion +7%, full-year sales growth guidance raised to 5%–7%, stock +4.7%, the 14th quarter of growth" — this is in fact the August 2025 report. Today's 8-K gives real figures of EPS $4.17, revenue $1.267 billion, the 15th quarter of growth, and full-year sales growth of about +5%. We switched to the SEC EDGAR primary filing. For the same trap see [[phantom-earnings-from-search-summary]] and [[recurring-column-headlines-hide-date]].
  2. The investing.com pre-market leaderboard returned TXT +4.68%, EQIX +4.15%, ALL +2.67%, DTE −6.61%, MCK −5.67%, none of which held up when measured against the stockanalysis API (measured at +0.24%/5 shares, 0.00%/16 shares, 0.00%/26 shares, +0.21%/58 shares, −0.34%/68 shares respectively). That leaderboard was discarded wholesale; only SJM/MOS/BSX/GDDY/SMMT from it were confirmed by measurement.
  3. WSM's pre-market quote was $241.00 (+2.67%) at 08:00 ET and $228.00 (−2.87%) at 08:05 ET, but cumulative volume at both timestamps was an unchanged 3,165 shares — the quote is internally inconsistent, so it was explicitly flagged as unusable in the body and no directional conclusion was drawn from it.
  4. 🔴 Hallucinated data that nearly made it into the body: when searching for "the actual July core PCE reading" at 08:22 ET, a search summary returned "July core PCE +0.27% m/m, 2.88% y/y, broadly in line with Goldman's expectation." That cannot possibly be today's reading — ① both the filing time and the search moment are earlier than the 08:30 ET release; ② June core PCE actually printed 3.3% (CNBC, 2026-07-30), and a 42bp single-month drop in the y/y rate is implausible; ③ 2.88% matches the actual value for July 2025. Judged to be prior-year data returned by the summary as news; discarded, and the body treats the release as "not yet published." For the same trap see [[phantom-earnings-from-search-summary]] and [[stale-source-silent-lag]].
  5. Verifying yesterday's AMD catalyst was the highest-value output from the subagents this round: Raymond James's $201 billion TAM is below the $220 billion that AMD management self-reported on the 8/11 call. Without checking that layer, this brief would have written AMD's +4.91% up as "a sector positive driven by new information" — a directional error. For the same trap see [[recurring-column-headlines-hide-date]] and [[trace-to-first-disclosure-date]].
  6. Another near-miss: NVDA and INTU both began including SBC in non-GAAP starting FY27. Had we flagged the accounting change only at INTU while continuing to compare NVDA's historical non-GAAP EPS as usual, we would have used two standards in the same brief. Notes were added in both places. See [[company-redefines-non-gaap-fake-miss]].

Data-sourcing failures:

  • WebFetch returned HTTP 403/404 for cnbc.com/stock-market-today-live-updates, benzinga.com/premarket, and corporate.abercrombie.com; the CNBC quote API has been blocked wholesale by Akamai since 2026-08-12 and was not attempted again this time.
  • All pre-market slots were switched to stockanalysis.com /api/quotes/s/<TICKER>, using a self-built concurrent scanning script (/tmp/pmscan.py) covering roughly 140 names; it ran normally with no rate limiting.
  • SEC EDGAR data.sec.gov/submissions and the full-text Archives both worked normally; the ANF and WSM 8-Ks were parsed successfully by stripping tags into plain text (rather than via pypdf), without relying on automated summarization to extract numbers.

Two directional errors caught by the pre-filing re-check (08:27 ET):

  • SMTC flipped from +4.10% to −1.20% while volume rose from 419,000 to 536,000 shares. The first draft had it 3rd on the bullish list tagged "watch closely," and §2 described it as "the only earnings report today with all three positives." Had we filed on the single 08:08 snapshot, that recommendation would have put clients into the tail end of the giveback right at the open. It has been downgraded to "watch only," with matching corrections in five places: §0.5, §2, §3.1, §5⑥, §7.
  • WSM's quote went from "frozen and unusable" to −4.68%, confirming direction. The first draft could only say "no direction given"; after the re-check we can give direction, though still not magnitude (7,308 shares).
  • This is exactly the "re-pull once just before filing" that [[premarket-quotes-accumulate-snapshot-is-not-fact]] requires. Both names moved in the direction of weakening the original conclusion — which shows the re-check cannot be done only when a conclusion looks shaky.

Not obtained / left blank:

  • BSX (−4.91%, 308,000 shares), GDDY (−3.79%), and SMMT (+15.46%, 389,000 shares) were all confirmed by measurement as genuine large pre-market moves, but multiple rounds of searching failed to locate a same-day primary catalyst. Per the lesson in [[no-news-found-is-not-no-news]], the body explicitly says "no same-day primary catalyst located" and does not say "no news," and all three were given a consistent wait-and-see tag.
  • The specific figures from HEI's and BOX's 8/25 after-hours reports were not obtained; the body marks them "unverified."
  • The actual 08:30 ET PCE/GDP values had not been released when this brief was filed (08:10 ET); the body treats them as "pending" and gives two-sided scenarios.

Subagent status and the conclusions they changed (this section is the main source of quality this round):

  • fundamentals-analyst (NVDA): contributed four items — investment gains contaminating the TTM P/E (32.63x→37.6x), the forward P/E being at a three-year low, the $119 billion of purchase commitments, and inventory days on hand not deteriorating.
  • fundamentals-analyst (AMD+INTU): independently established that RJ's TAM is below the company's self-reported figure, which directly changed AMD's characterization; and verified INTU's accounting change and the $5.81/$1.48 word for word against the SEC original, adding the easily-missed point that "$5.81 is an after-tax figure."
  • bull-bear-debater (NVDA): overturned two conclusions in the first draft of this brief
    1. The draft described NVDA's theme stage as "crowded." In fact, year-to-date NVDA is +14.24% vs. SMH +54.34% and MU +226.89% — a laggard trailing by 40pp. The premise of "sell the news" (crowded positioning) does not hold for NVDA itself. Rewritten throughout.
    2. The draft followed the media framing that "implied ±5.4–5.9% < the ±7.4% realized over the past 12 quarters, so options are underpricing." Recomputing quarter by quarter from actual OHLC, the absolute day-after move over the last 8 quarters averaged just 3.73% (4.35% over 9 quarters), and exceeded 5.03% in only 3 of 8 — the direction is exactly reversed: options are expensive. The ±7.4% includes the 2023–24 high-volatility period and is obsolete. Rewritten, with both sample bases labeled. It also contributed the three-quarter gross margin top, the 54% customer concentration, the $105 billion residual value guarantee from 8/17 (Item 2.03 off-balance-sheet obligation), the 8/8 negative open→close, and the decay in EPS surprise from 29.35% to ~5%.
  • Lesson: both overturned conclusions came from "reusing a ready-made narrative template" (crowded stock dies on the news; options underprice volatility), not from arithmetic errors. You have to compute the criterion yourself, especially when it happens to support the sentence you already wanted to write. See [[verification-point-beats-headline-conclusion]] and [[premarket-quotes-accumulate-snapshot-is-not-fact]].

Quality-check revision log (risk-auditor, all items handled)

Verdict: "publishable after fixes," with 7 must-fix items before publication. Disposition item by item:

# Red flag Disposition
1 IGV/SMH compares share counts across price levels, and "IGV's volume is actually larger" is an illusion (5.5x price difference; on notional SMH is more than 2x IGV); and IGV's volume field was frozen at 64,979 across four readings Overturned and redone. Added §0.6: switched to stock-by-stock equal weighting across 43 names with a symmetric $5 million notional threshold. The gap narrows from "1.5% vs. 0.4%" to −1.77% vs. −0.67% (1.10pp), with an explicit note that "semis are falling too — this is a broad decline, not a one-sided move." §0, §2, §8 and §9④ were all downgraded to "to be verified" in step
2 SMTC's direction had already reversed and WSM's quote had become internally consistent Found and handled during the 08:27 re-check (§0.5); SMTC downgraded in five places
3 ANF is down y/y once the refund is excluded, and the brief compares only against the company's own guidance, never against last year Year-over-year table added: operating income −9.0%, margin −182bps, EPS only +4.3% and carried by a 7% buyback of the share count. Added the line "beating guidance ≠ beating last year"
4 ANF's +6.1% mixes in a change of the tariff-rate assumption from 15% to 10–12.5%, unquantified Added a 🔴 paragraph listing the three non-operating contributors and stating explicitly that "the 8-K does not break them out, this brief cannot attribute them, and the residual operating contribution could be close to zero"
5 NVDA's SBC differential was off by about 4.4x ($0.35/17% should be ~$0.08/4%), and the company has already restated its historical series, so "not comparable across periods" does not stand Corrected, with the restated values Q1FY26 $0.78 / Q4FY26 $1.59 added and the old-basis $1.05/$1.30 marked obsolete. This item is the brief committing the very error it was warning clients about
6 "Options are underpricing volatility" conflicts with the brief's own table showing 4.35% Already self-corrected before the quality check (the last 8 quarters actually realized 3.73%, the opposite direction); the wording was amended in both places
7 AMD's implied Q4 y/y of +109% should be +56% Corrected (crossed wires with the FY27 EPS +104.6%)
8 Universal quantifiers such as "the whole market" and "the only," while the ~180-name scan scope was sealed inside the internal block The coverage scope was moved into the body header; the universal quantifiers were deleted
9 INTU's "decelerating across the board with no exceptions" omits the largest segment, GBS GBS row added with a note that the basis is not comparable; the conclusion changed to "all four lines in this table with a clean base are decelerating"
10 INTU used the pre-market price for the current price but the prior close for valuation — two bases Split into two separately labeled lines (prior close −49.3% / P/S 4.62x; pre-market −54.2% / P/S 4.19x)
11 "Two independent paths corroborating each other" does not hold (non-GAAP already excludes equity gains and losses) The statement was deleted along with an explanation of why it is not independent validation
12 The phrase "subagent" leaked outside the internal marker; API field names are meaningless to clients; "see the revision log below" dangled All three handled (fail-open risk)
13 Two different conventions for 52-week position mixed together; AMD's 22.0% fits neither; MU's anomalous range left exposed Standardized on the drawdown convention, AMD changed to −18.5%, and a note added to MU that "the range is questionable and is not used to judge position"
14 Cross-market/commodity/rates-and-FX readings had no timestamps; BNO −4.77% conflicts with Brent −2% §0.5 now groups readings under four clocks; the energy section notes the two windows differ and cannot be compared side by side
15 Several pillar-level arguments had no links and no timestamps (especially the CME hike odds) CME now has a source plus the warning "readings from 8/17–8/20, not current"; WSM's five-year average and BSX's three weakening lines were downgraded to "no primary source obtained, not used as a criterion"
16 "Four data releases" is actually three — PCE is contained within Personal Income and Outlays, and durable goods orders belong to Census Corrected
17 Several places had crossed from information organization into trading instructions The scenario table is now labeled "historical analogy, not a target price"; "premiums are cheap" was deleted; "better odds than shorting energy" was changed to a description of the risk structure; §6's "short candidate?" column was changed to "is the negative fully priced"
18 The 50,000-share threshold was applied only to single stocks, with ETFs and the energy row exempt The threshold was changed to $5 million notional and applied consistently throughout; the energy row now carries notional figures flagged as below threshold

Three data gaps flagged by the quality check that this brief could not fill (disclosed honestly):

  1. The sell-side consensus (EPS and revenue) for ANF's and WSM's current quarter, and the time it was captured, were not obtained. This brief measures "beat" against the companies' own May guidance, whereas the stocks are priced against sell-side consensus. This is the decisive gap in the strength of the ANF conclusion — partly hedged in the body with "beating guidance ≠ beating last year," but that is no substitute for a consensus comparison.
  2. Whether NVDA's consensus of $92 billion / EPS $2.09 has been rebuilt on the new SBC-inclusive non-GAAP basis was not verified analyst by analyst. The brief is warning clients about an accounting trap tonight while not having confirmed which side of it the consensus it cites belongs to. Back-of-envelope (($92 billion × 75.0% − non-GAAP opex of $8.3 billion + other income of about $600 million) × 0.83 ÷ roughly 24.4 billion diluted shares ≈ $2.08–2.09) points to the new basis, but that is indirect evidence and sell-side model footnotes were not checked one by one.
  3. The latest CME September hike odds were not obtained; the 8/17–8/20 range is used, as flagged in the body.
